Meanwhile a regular day in Russia

Just couldn’t pass this by. All the stereotypes about Russians keeping bears as pet’s culminate in this video.

My favorite moment, when the bear sits in a chair.

Writing 2.3 – A Contract with the Reader

When I took a graduate class called “Writing the Novel” a few years ago, I learned two very important things.  First, if you tell a writer that her work in progress is a romance novel when she thinks she’s writing literary fiction, be prepared to see a chair fly across the room.  Second, there’s something called “The Contract with the Reader.”  Let’s forget about throwing chairs for a while and focus on the contract, which was something I had never heard of before.

Let’s pretend you’re in a bar and a guy sitting to your left says, “You want to hear a story?”  Of course you don’t, but you say, “Sure.  Thrill me.”  He knows sarcasm, so he says, “Tell you what.  If I give you a four-sentence setup, and you agree that you’re interested in hearing the rest, then you owe me a beer.  How’s that?”  So of course…

Random Rationality

Following on from my last guest post, The Insanity of Biotech by biochemist Paul Little, Mike Bendzela is the author of this guest post. These guest posts have been tangentially exploring similar subjects I have in my book, but in different directions; and this post explores organic farming. In S3: Science, Statistics and Skepticism, I lightheartedly tackle the naturalistic fallacy and use some bad (and funny) statistics that purposefully confuse correlation with causation, intending to teach a lesson. As I was writing the book, Mike Bendzela reached out to me with his organic story that sprouts off from that Correlation chapter, and it is a supremely informative read. (A bit long, well worth it, and you’re used to long articles from me anyway.)

My take on The Great Gatsby

My take on The Great Gatsby

Not sure how many of you read the book, but I found the recent movie quite good. At least when we exchanged opinions with my wife who hadn’t read the story we agreed on the key points.

It’s a good read and a vivid depiction of consumerism culture in America which serves well as a background for a love story.

When Jen brought forward the idea of decorating Ukrainian eggs this past weekend, I jumped at the opportunity.

Ukrainian egg4

I don’t know if it’s just me and my friends, it seems as though many people have had exposure to Ukrainian egg painting at some point in their lives. For me, it was in either grade two or three, when I was living in Sudbury the first time around. My mom and I made a set of three eggs on a mother-daughter craft date. The details of the actual painting aren’t too clear in my mind, but I do know the legacy of those eggs live on. Up until this past week, the eggs were sitting in the display cabinet in my parent’s dining room. Because you don’t empty the contents of the egg prior to painting (the membrane serves as insulation, otherwise the empty shell would become too hot and delicate…

ecjournomist

Wednesday, I was asked to write three takeaways from my second semester at the Columbia Missourian. I took 90 seconds to scrawl something incoherent on the corner of some page in my notebook.

The only takeaway is this: I am my own obstacle. When I get an assignment I don’t want to work on, the whole machine shuts down. Paralysis. I wish I had the resolve to say no, or better: to get over it. I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I don’t know what is fulfilling. But it’s not this.

Not this.

The two scariest words in the English language.

I picked journalism from the pool of writing-based professions when I was 18. I’m too fickle to write a novel, too proud to put a brand on my expression, too terrified to risk a closeted existence of poverty and bad poetry. Reporting. You can learn to love…
